Paper and Motors Project

HELICOPTER MAN:
Paper: Blades made of cardboard
Motor: I had one DC motor running the larger blade and one turning the smaller one that stuck out the side.

Here are some photos I took of my helicopter man in its initial stages:

Here is the Video of my presentation of the Final Product to the class:

Changes: I angled the blades to create more lift and removed the smaller blade as it kept hitting the large one as they both rotated.

Paper and Motors Project

Michelle Hua & Phuong Diep

Our inspiration was based off of the movie "Mic Macs", which can be seen here in this video (the scene is about 35 seconds in). We wanted to make a spinning dress figure similar to the one in the video, but wanted to look for a way to simplify it for ourselves. By doing so, we decided to use DC motors that would be powered by rather small charged batteries so that the ballerinas do not spin too fast. We then placed the motors inside a "stage" that was made with light weight particle board. The ballerinas were made of construction paper, straws and tissue paper.

If we were to further our idea, we would probably hook our contraption up to an Arduino so that we can choreograph different dance numbers for the ballerinas, or even only have one spinning on its own.

Paper Medicine

I decided to create a paper person and relate tape as his medicine. This project aimed to expose the faults present in out health care system which seems to be more concerned with selling products rather than solving human health issues. The basis behind this came from a television ad in which the warning dialogue about possible side effects of the drug ran longer than the actual advertisement of the medicine.

here is some documentation on the project and also a discussion around it:

Making a Snow Angel

Walk until you see snow
Stand in Snow
With hands down and feet touching
Fall back

If stopped by snow->
1. While arms are straight, touch elbow to head
2. While arms are straight, return to original position
3. While legs are straight, move legs away from each other until legs are stopped by unknown force
4. While legs are straight, return to original position
(repeat step 1 to 4 until satisfied)
Bend legs
Lift upper body off snow
Stand up and enjoy

--//for other situations--

Else if not stopped by snow
1. Lift arm up and put hand on the back of head
2. Go to the hospital
3. Stop "making a snow angel"

Else if not stopped by anything after 3 seconds
1. Flip yourself around
2. Stretch your shirt sideways with hands
3. Try to glide your way to safety
4. Stop "making a snow angel"

Nicole and Tamara's Paper and Motor Project

Nicole and I decided to play with both the material of paper and how it is used in our society. Paper is flat and can be folded. In our society we use it to write messages. While paper can be very flimsy and be ripped very easily it is hard to believe that it can cause revolutions (through the power of the press). We decided to communicate the influence of paper by creating an enormous paper sculpture. We also wanted to include the surprise aspect by having the viewer watch as the sculpture grew in size, such as we were surprised when thinking how something as simple as paper could be so integral to a culture. To further the point we made the paper from influential news articles hand picked from magazines such as Time and from within the last 5 years. At our presentation we positioned a spotlight on the kinetic sculpture to add drama. We were inspired by this video that Myfanwy shows us in class : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzF-MxHa5YA

Here is our video please watch and enjoy :)

Instruction

Instructions Assignment

1. Find large book or magazine
2. place object in front of you
3. stand on object with left foot
4. absorb information from left side of book
5. switch feet
6. absorb information on right side of book
7. recite what you have absorbed
8. find bigger book/magazine
9. repeat

This experiment worked well. I was aiming to create a set of actions that everyone would understand yet still cause them to express the action differently. People can obviously not absorb information by standing on it, but it is interesting what one imagines they absorb through undertaking the steps. I imagine doing this experiment over and over and the room becoming more and more quiet, as participants begin to meditate on the experience and "absorb" more of the information around them.

Kelvin and Ji's Paper and Motors assignment Documentation

Woody The Tims Tree Woodpecker.

We made a woodpecker out of different types of paper, two Tim Hortons cups, a simple rotating motor and a Cell phone Vibrating motor.

We decided to pursue with this idea based off experimenting with our materials at hand. Our idea began to take shape when we heard the sound from the vibrator motor banging against the cup. Later on, we thought of covering the cups with colored paper to make it more appealing, but that affected the sound. So we decided not to do anything to the cups.

Here is a video of the product.

Motor & Paper Project - Nadja Cada

For the Motor and Paper Project I created an owl figure out of paper products with a motor neck that allowed for the head to spin clockwise. The owl could be perched on your shoulder as well.

The body of the owl was made of classic cardboard, the 'feathers' was made of two colours of sandpaper, the eyes of printer paper, and the beak of a star-burst wrapper.

I developed this idea from exploring the different types of creates that can be related to sitting on your shoulder. I settled on the owl due to the amazing fact that an owl can turn its head a full 180, which gives the impression that they can turn their head all the way around. Which matched with the motor that I bought.

I enjoyed this project and know that there are many other routs that can be explored within my concept such as, additional switches that allow for more control of the owls head movement, developing my own creature, and exploring different paper options of the overall look.

Diane S's Motor & Paper

Paper & Motors

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxuTqwOMLJs

Concept: Use vibrator motor to bring a destructive quote about art to life.

Quote: “ Art is the symbol of the two noblest human efforts: to construct and refrain from destruction” – Evelyn Waugh (famous british author) brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/desctruction.html

Irony: Created an art piece that is human constructed and threw the strings that holds it together its attempting to refrain from deconstruction. The motors interact with the paper by attempting to deconstruct it and rip it apart.

Note: This piece is supposed to be considered a prototype for a bigger art piece that could be seen in a gallery. I really wanted to focus on the concept and bring the quote to life threw the materials that I used. With a larger environment to present and more of a knowledge of the tools that are available to me, I believe that this could be taken to a much bigger scale and threw that could have a much bigger audience reaction. Perhaps the next step would be instead of the interaction be between the paper and motor, but threw the audience powering the motors attempting to deconstruct it.

Materials:Bold

Tissue Paper: Red + Orange - used to write out the quote

Plain white note paper: Because it is where one writes ideas

Cardboard: Hold up piece/motors

Two Vibrator Motors

String: To hold the cut quote together. To amplify what the quote is saying.

Batteries: To power the art piece

Rola K's Computerless Algorithm

The purpose of my experiment is to see what the participants will draw according to the colours each one have chose (even when all the participants have agreed on one emotion "in this case the emotion is love"). Moreover, I wanted to see if the participants will start working individually, since each as a colour or if they will start working as a team, because they have the same emotion and they are working on the same piece.

Instructions:

1) tear pieces of papers from a drawing pad

2) Stick the papers on the floor beside each other randomly

3) 6 participants stand in front of the papers

4) Each participant picks up a brush

5) Each participant choose one colour to draw with

6) The participants have to choose an emotion

7) Participants begin to draw according to the emotion they chose

8) After 1 minute, participants stop drawing

9) Document the process of the experiment

How to do the Hokey Pokey

1) Divide into two separate groups

2) Form a circle facing each other

3) Extend right foot into circle

4) Extend right foot away from circle

5) Extend right foot into circle

6) Shake right foot

7) Turn around 360degrees

8) Extend left foot into circle

9) Extend left foot away from circle

10)Extend left foot into circle

11)Shake left foot

12)Turn around 360degrees

13)Extend right hand into circle

14)Extend right hand away from circle

15)Extend right hand into circle

16)Shake right hand

17)Turn around 360degrees

18)Extend left hand into circle

19)Extend left hand away from circle

20)Extend left hand into circle

21)Shake left hand

22)Turn around 360degrees

"How to Make a Birthday Wish"

Click the following Image to see my Documentation of "How to Make a Birthday Wish".

Here are the instructions:

Step 1) Aquire a pencil.
Step 2)Take out a peice of paper, any kind of paper will do, but sharing will not do
Step 3)Close your eyes.
Step 4)Umagine something that you are not, or you can't or you're missing.
Step 5)Take that something, open your eyes and write it down
Step 6)Turn the paper upsidedown.
Step 7)Erase it, or scratch it out.
Step 8)Write the oppposite of whatever you weren't, don't or are missing. Write that you wish you will, can or have found it.
Step 9)Fold the peice of paper six ways.
Step 10)Put it in a pocket, somewhere you will find.
Step 11) Open it on your birthday.
Step 12) Close your eyes and speak it in your head.

Artist Commentary:
Despite confusion as to what to write on the peice of paper during my instructions, I found people's reactions to be exactly as I expected. Nevertheless, I beleive some confusion is healthy, and can prompt great creativity and spontaneity. My intention by getting them to write something they don't have was to make them dig deep about what they truly desired. Generally we think more profoundly when imagining what we want in the negative. I wanted people to think about what they really wanted, not just something that they want at that moment like a drink for example. Of course there will always be people who are more focused on the present and will express their want for something fleeting at that mome; a coffee, a haircut or a pencil to write on the piece of paper. Although, I suppose those wishes could be equally something that someone has a great need for. A birthday wish should be something that you want very deeply, something you may beleive that only divine powers could deliver and that is the kind of wishes I was looking for when giving my instructions.
