The Object
The idea behind my self-portrait is that as a student I feel suspended between being an adult and being a child. The words on the outside of the container represent this that I want, or would like to be (love, confidence, happiness, knowledge, ambition, dream, creativity). The objects suspended within the two layers of glass ( an A+ ribbon, my age, the word friendship, a medallion saying “party time”, an artist pallet, and the word “student”) represent the things that are important to me, or so I thought until I got out of my own house and into university, but each has their own good and bad side – hence why one side of each object is bright and eye catching, and the reverse side is messy and uncared for.
The Audio
The audio features three sounds, two are the sounds of bubbling water, something that is calming and beautiful, but can also be terribly dangerous, just as the objects in the jar. The third sound is a music box like piano playing the notes DADEA-FADBE-CEADD using the grid below translates into my full name of Kayla Marie Clark. I chose these sounds because they reminded me of childhood which I am not sure I am ready to leave behind.
